Gilliam

What Does This Discovery Mean?

My mother is my connection to the Leonard family. She is the daughter of Clyde Leonard. Through my grandfather I have traced the family back to Prince George County, Virginia,  The first Leonard in Franklin County, North Carolina was John Leonard. He had two sons, William and Frederick. Clyde descends from Frederick.

Scota Gilliam was married to William's son, John Leonard.

My grandmother was Iva West. She was the daughter of Luther West and Kate Pearce. Kate's parents were Doctor Buck Pearce and Carolina Gupton. Carolina's father was Elijah Albert Gupton. Elijah's mother was Frances "Franky" House Leonard the daughter of John and Scota. This makes John and Scota my 5 times great grandparents.

This was as far as I could go on Scota until I found her maiden name. Now I can go back on the Gilliam line to John Gilliam who came to Virginia in 1635. John was 21 years old and his brother, Thomas was 18. They sailed from Gravesend on the George. John is my 10 times great grandfather!

What a wonderful discovery!!
Time to dig some more!!

Finding a Maiden Name

Scotia

Besides having a unique name, Scotia was married to John Leonard, the son of William Leonard.
For years family has been looking for her maiden name. Once again looking into neighbors can give us the answer.

It appears that Scotia was the daughter of William Gillam. When he passed away his children were minors and assigned a guardian, John Leonard.

Another FAN club discovery!
