The West Family Line - More on Peter West's Children

Peter West's Children

Mary A. West

Today's story is about Peter's daughter Mary A. West and her children.

Mary A West was born in Granville County in 1820. She married James Eakes on 23 Dec 1835, it appears that she married very young.  She and James remained in Granville and raised their family.
James Eakes' parents were Zachariah Eakes and Sally Traylor.

Mary and James felt the affects of the Civil War in a profound way. They lost three sons and one son-in-law was wounded.

Mary and James' Children:

James K. Eakes was born in 1837 in Granville County. On the 1860 Census he was living with James and Eliza Tally and their daughter.  On May 30, 1862 James enlisted. From his records we know that he was 25 years old and 5 foot 10 inches tall. His occupation was farmer. He enlisted at Oak Hill for the duration of the war. He was in the 55th Regiment Company K.

James K Eakes muster roll

I have included the muster roll document because of the comment at the bottom. It appears to say he was absent and went for a laugh... tell me what you think this might say??

It appears to be dated June 30, 1862

Thanks to A.W. Bragg for telling me what this says and means.

"Early in the war, several of these farmers were reported absent on "wheat furlough".  Wheat furlough is being allowed to return home for the harvest.  In the early part of the war, farmers were allowed to go home to take care of their crops as long as they promised to return to their regiment once all was taken care of at home.  In late 1862, this practice had ceased."

I know this a bit hard to read but it is the Roll of Honor. James died on 15 Aug 1862 in Goldsboro, North Carolina.

James K Eakes is buried in the Willow Dale Cemetery in Goldsboro where a wonderful monument has been erected.

Mary and James' second son was Zachariah Mangum Eakes. He went by Mangum.

Mangum Eakes was born in Granville County in 1839.

In 1860 Mangum is also living with someone other than his parents.

1860 Census - Mangum

Mary's brother, Thomas married into the Greenway family so maybe this is part of Thomas' wife's family.

On March 1, 1862 Mangum enlisted in the 23rd Regiment Company I. Mangum was 5 foot 3 inches with light hair.

From this document we see that Mangum was sent to Lynchburg Virginia to the hospital there. He died of measles on June 9, 1862. But there is also a document listing Thyphoid.
From other documents in Mangum's file at Fold3.com it appears that Mary and James tried to get benefits to cover his burial.

Mary and James Eakes next child was Elizabeth Ann Eakes. She is listed on documents as Lizzie A, Eliza Ann and Elizabeth. Elizabeth was born in September of 1841 in Granville County.

Once again we find one of Mary and James Eakes' children living with someone other than their parents. Mary is living with another Eakes family.

Eliza married John L Clark on 4 Oct 1865. John's parents were L. Clark and Betsy Noble.

John had returned from service in the 23rd Regiment Company I. He enlisted on June 17th 1861. During his tine in the service he was in the hospital several times. He was captured at Kelly's Ford in November of 1863. He was severely wounded at Chancellorsville Virginia. Due to this disability he was discharged and sent home.

In the 1870 John and now Lizzie are living next to Lucinda West. (not shown)

I thought the 1870 Census was destroyed???

John was on the bottom of the previous page, that is why this is two pics.

From this document I really can not determine if John and Lizzie have children or if these children belong to someone else. John and Lizzie have been married 5 years so the ages do not support these being John and Lizzie's children.

The 1880 Census show no children in the household. They are also living in Clarksville, Virginia. Clarksville isn't that far from Oak Hill in Granville. Future census records show them in Granville County, North Carolina.

Living with John and Eliza were a boarder and a sister in law, Mary Eakes. Could this be Eliza's sister? Mary West would have been in her late 40's when she was born.
The last column indicates that Lizzie was sick. I can not decipher it, maybe you have an idea what it says??

In the future census John and Lizzie were living alone. I do not believe they had any children.

John passed away first at the age of 80 on 20 Nov 1823. Lizzie almost made it to 100 years according to her death certificate, she passed on 29 May 1933. But earlier records indicate that she was born in 1841. Notice that her name on this death certificate is Mary Eliza. Where did the Ann come from that she used in 1920? She seemed to change her name on each census as well as her age.

Mary and James' next child was Peter K Eakes. Peter was born in 1844 in Granville County.

In the 1860 Census Peter was living at home with Mary and James, he was 16 at the time.

1860 Census
Peter enlisted at the age of 18, on April 22, 1862. He was 5 foot 6 inches with dark hair and blue eyes. His story is a bit confusing because the dates are all different on his records. But it seems that after he reported in April he was in the hospital in Richmond May 11 -20, 1862 with Rubella. On June 3rd he was back in the hospital. July he was listed as a deserter. Then March of 1863 he was back in the hospital in Richmond or Danville then transferred to Lynchburg, Virginia, where he died. One document says March 18 and another one in the file says April 1, 1863. And even the way March was written I am not sure.

There is so much confusion with the documents I am beginning to wonder if there were two Peter Eakes that served in the 23rd Regiment Company I and they both died of Measles. Guess we might never know the answer to that question.

James Eakes again requested the settlement for one of his sons.

It is not known where Peter K Eakes was buried.

Another child of Mary and James Eakes was Sally or Betty Eakes. Once again she seemed to change her name.

In the 1850 Census between Peter and Beverly is Sallie age 4. In the 1860 Census between Peter and Beverly is Betty age 12. After 1860 there does not seem to be any records for her. There are two marriages; in 1858 to a James Tally but she would have been about 8 years old so we can rule that out. In 1855 there is a marriage to a James Ross and again due to the age I doubt she married at that time. Since there are no records that I can find, I am wondering if she died after 1860 and before 1880. For now it is a question unanswered.

The next child of Mary and James Eakes is Beverly Fleming Eakes. He was born 20 Jun 1846 in Granville County. In 1860 he is on the census as being 12 years old and not old enough to serve in the war. Beverly married Inda Anna Jones on 31 Aug 1877. Her parents were William Jones and Martha Washington.

Beverly Eakes

Beverly and Inda had six children and made their home in Person County, North Carolina after the birth of their children. Prior to 1900 they made their home in Granville County.
Beverly passed away on 29 Nov 1922. Inda passed away 23 Dec 1924. They are both buried at Mount Zion Church Cemetery in Berea Granville County.

Another child of Mary and James was Roger G. Eakes born Aug 1850 in Granville County.
On 9 Dec 1876 he married Frances Elizabeth Critcher, the daughter of William Critcher and Eliza Norwood.

Fannie Critcher
They lived in Granville County for many years. The 1900 census shows that family moved to Franklin County, North Carolina. Roger and Fannie had 7 children.

Roger passed away in 1909 and Frances passed away on 9 Mar 1915. They are buried in the cemetery of Hill King Methodist Church in Louisburg, North Carolina.

Franklin Eakes or Benjamin Frankin Eakes was another child of Mary and James Eakes.
He was born 8 May 1852 in Granville County.

He was married twice. His first marriage was to Mary Elizabeth Bollings/Bowlings. Records indicate that they were married 30 May 1880 in Granville County. They had two daughters. Frank married again on 9 Nov 1888, so we must assume that his first wife had passed away. Two more daughters were born to Frank.

In 1880, according to the census, Frank and Bettie were sharing their home with Mary Eakes (mother) and John E. Eakes brother.

1880 Census

Mary Elizabeth Bowling/Bollings parents were James Wesley Bowlings/Bollings and Sarah Mize.
Barbara Dixon's parent were Thomas Edmund Dixon and Permelia C. Puryear.

Frank spent his life in Granville County. He passed away 15 Mar 1923. Barbara passed away before him on 28 Oct 1918. They are buried in the Stem Family Cemetery in Granville County.

John Edmond Eakes is the last child of Mary and James Eakes. There was an Edmond Barnett Eakes in Granville County about the same time. Records for these two make searching difficult. However in 1880 it is obvious that these two are separate individuals because John was living with his brother Frank and Barnett was living in a totally different family group. Throw into this search is a John Ellis Eakes, also a different family.

In 1860 he is listed as Edmond on the census with Mary and James at age 2. From these definitive census we can conclude his name was James Edmond Eakes. But records for him using this name are elusive and will require further research. Did he use a different name like other members of the family did?

For the possible Mary Eakes again no records except for the census in 1880 living with Lizzie and John Clark in Clarksville Virginia.

To conclude the story of Mary and James Eakes, parents of the above children.

James is believed to have passed away around 1874, he is not present in the 1880 census records.
Mary passed away sometime after 1880, the last time we find her in the census records. But since there is not a 1890 census to compare we can not be sure of her death date. If anyone has found proof of her death, please share.

This concludes the story of Peter West's daughter, Mary A. West and her family. (for now)
